Most Times You Will be Alone, But You Will Make It

In our collective struggle to demand better care for the earth and the human race, the fight for environmental justice takes a toll on many warriors. Yet, some passionate activists have managed to remain steadfast in the face of these challenges throughout their lifetime.

Early, Bright and Important Lights

Women and children always bear the full brunt of environmental disasters. Elder Olanike noticed this in her early childhood days and it sparked a fire in her heart.  Driven by a desire to bridge the gap between humanity and nature, she founded the Environment Protection Network.

While educating people about environmental issues through the network, Elder Olanike encountered a harsh reality, the communities most affected lacked basic resources like water and firewood, Women and children who bore the brunt of journeying long distances for resources.

There was a need for a more targeted approach that represented the realities of women and children who are the worst hit by environmental challenges in Kaduna. This gave birth to the Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE). The organisation promotes constructive environmental ideas and sustainable practices by empowering people, especially women, and young girls.

What Matters is Honesty with Oneself

Advocating for women, she courageously pushed open doors to rooms where she stood out brightly. While it was an exhilarating opportunity, the fear of failure loomed large. In a male-dominated space, Elder Olanike often felt isolated, but her passion overshadowed her loneliness and fear.

Despite occasional moments of confusion, she found solace in her conviction that she was on the right path. Believing in oneself, is paramount, regardless of others’ opinions. Even when facing opposition from those she represents, surrounding oneself with support is crucial. In the face of adversity, Elder Olanike remained steadfast in her commitment to justice, knowing that staying true to oneself is the ultimate victory.

Keep Your Sight on Progress

What we choose to focus on tends to magnify. While it may seem like negativity is pervasive, it’s often because we’re fixated on the problems rather than seeking solutions. Shifting our attention towards what works can bring about positive change.

Adversity is a part of life, but it’s not permanent. Instead of succumbing to environmental and economic challenges, let’s tap into our creativity and resourcefulness. There’s a wealth of knowledge available to us, waiting to be utilised. By embracing innovation and exploring alternative options, we can navigate through hardships and emerge stronger.

Remember, you have the power to make a difference. Feed your mind with positivity and inspiration, and believe in your ability to overcome obstacles. With determination and resilience, you can be a Changemaker.
